BROKEN GARAGE TRACK: TIPS, SIGNS, AND OPTIONS

GETTING YOU BACK ON TRACK.

Does this sound familiar? If you noticed the movement of your garage door is not smooth or even stuck at some point. One of the causes could be tracks malfunctioning or simply broke leaving the once smooth movement of the door panels to become a screeching, groaning, straining disaster about to happen. If left without a preemptive course of action, the weakening, damaged, or broken track could cause major issues to the doors and their components as well as to everything inside the garage.

WITH AGE COMES STRAIN.

  • Checking For Obstruction. Any debris can interfere with your garage door’s operation. Obstructions can prevent cables and rollers from moving correctly, and the tension created can result in bent tracks.
  • Clean the Sensor lenses. Dust, dirt or even moisture can cause a garage door to hitch and pitch
  • Look for any visible bending on the tracks themselves. Look…but don’t touch. There could be hidden scraps of broken metal that are unseen.
  • Snapped coil or tension springs.
  • Cable malfunction. The cables that pull and support your garage door can get damaged over time. When one breaks, you’ll suddenly experience a lot of unsupported weight on the garage door tracks, which will lead to bending. This is not something you should try to repair yourself.

  • Like any other piece of heavy machinery, a garage door and its operating components also have a range of time usage. When all properly maintained, it should run you and your garage door 10-15 years of use. Some parts, however, have a lesser strain life cycle due to the sheer weight and precise alignment required. Therefore, if you notice corrosions at some spots at the door tracks, it needs immediate servicing to prevent the broken tracks.
With broken, dented, or twisted tracks, your garage door will be shaky, rattle upon use and overall seem unwilling to complete a cycle without a few extra clicks of the remote. If this happens, you can try some of the following “safe” troubleshooting quick fixes that determine if it is a tracking issue.

    PUT DOWN THE REMOTE.

  • Roller misalignment may lead to a clue pointing out the problem may be the tracks. This results from a lack of lubrication on roller stems. Failure to lubricate these rollers leads to inflexibility and bending of the lower portion of the horizontal track and will end up costing you a necessary replacement.
  • Road salt and the rust: East coast living brings many beautifying qualities but can also create havoc due to caustic and corrosive salts. Replacement. Natural deterioration can be avoided or extended with a simple inspection or factory-recommended replacement.
  • Broken cable drum connection. When this happens, and one attempts to close the door, the door will bend sideways and bend the track.
