Broken Automatic Door Opener? Troubleshooting tips.

GARAGE DOOR GROUND TO A HALT?

While a broken automatic door opener is a common repair, the fact that they "always" break down at the most inopportune times is what can send homeowners and businesses over the edge in the blink of an eye.

This is when you should call us to handle the repair for you. Trying to attempt a rushed and aggravated-filled DIY fix is bound to raise your injury risk levels. It could cause massive structural or personal property damage, not to mention nullifying any warranty coverage.

At Mass Garage Door Expert, we field our fair share of calls from people who have their car stuck in the garage due to a faulty garage door opener problem. And while there are many reasons this could have happened, there is one simple way that you can try to safely troubleshoot the problem and get on with your day until you can have us on-site to securely and thoroughly repair the breakdown for you. Follow the "7 minutes in 7 steps" listed below:

  1. Make sure any hand bolts or locks are not in operation. The door won't open if these locks are engaged. If the door doesn't budge, move on to the next step.
  2. Turn off the power to the garage door opener by unplugging it. Sometimes a reboot is in order.
  3. Next, find the release cord. It is usually a red handle or red cord hanging down from the center track.
  4. After locating the release cord, pull it to break the connection between the door and the opener. By bypassing it this way, you can lift the door open without using the automatic opener. You'll be able to re-engage it later.
  5. Lift the door straight up from the bottom at the center of the door. Once the door is above your head, the door's weight should slide it back onto the upper track. You can now move your car out of the garage.
  6. Once your car is out of the garage, you can lower it manually. Make sure to engage any locks on the garage door.
  7. As an added level of security, you should place something in the side rails about halfway down to slow any garage door falling.

A DIY FIX IS NOT A GUARANTEE

While the tips mentioned above are there to assist you in an informal, immediate exit, Mass Garage Doors Expert does not guarantee that they will even work or maintain the quick fix for any amount of time.

The tips are just recommended ways to buy you more time until you can schedule us later that day for an appropriate assessment, repair, or replacement. Not doing so will put your warranty at risk and no longer be covered by some insurance companies. Our technicians are highly skilled, licensed, and accredited garage door experts to guarantee the repair or replacement using only the manufacturer's recommended parts and hardware.

REMOTE AND OTHER POSSIBILITIES

We have discussed the fact that garage doors have an emergency release built into the door, but what we haven't covered yet are a few alternate reasons why your garage door opener stopped working in the first place.

  • Batteries. Yes, check your handheld remote for any battery that might be dead.
  • Recent storms or power outages may need you to enter another access code to reset the unit.
  • Remote eye sensors could be dirty, scratched, or simply out of alignment.
  • Bad or tripped circuit switch in your electrical panel.
  • The remote system is unplugged.
  • Any cross interference from Wi-Fi technology.
